its not a black box exactly neither it is a part of the loco.its the driver's luggage box and they put it on the floor board for short trips when they have to drop off another driver some place close.

Ah, must add another interesting bit of info that I remembered. In those days, the tickets for Rajdhanis used to be printed in something akin to an airline ticket today - thin paper, cover jacket with instructions written on them et al. I remember vividly because I used to collect train tickets (the old small card tickets), and I used to be very disappointed when we travelled by Rajdhani because I did not get those card tickets!
