When hauling air-braked stock, there is a compressor in the first coach that supplies air for the braking system. The red pipe is for connecting to that. Some locomotives like Fairy Queen carry their compressors on-board but it is still powered by the generator in the trailing cars. Posted by Harsh Vardhan on 2012 Jun 06 20:31:48 +0000 |

The locos have been modified for Air-Brake working.Wonder how the requisite pressure is built using the limited power sources in the locomotives. There is also a third pipe colored red,the function of which is not clear. Posted by Khalid Kagzi on 2012 Jun 06 17:31:12 +0000 |

Lovely shot Ashwin. Inspite of multiple images from similar angles, you somehow manage to bring out a sort of uniqueness in each and every one of your images and make them equally special. Great Effort & thanks for sharing!!! Posted by Kharad Zarir Variyava on 2012 Jun 06 04:22:43 +0000 |

I had seen this very picture way back in 2003 when Sundar Krishamurthy decided to share his terrific picture collection with us. It can be found here - http://www.irfca.org/~sundar/wcm02.html
