I second Sachin, an excelent photo! Surprised you managed to freeze motion horizontal to the camera at just 1/317 sec. I would have normally expected to be higher!

If this station is Maddur , then I would say certainly around 80kmph.

Yes, you are quite right. Late afternoon-the light did keep changing though. The train is northbound.

First I thought this was Goa or some place in the morning! I used to railfan with my father at a "phatak" in Patiala close to the station in early 80s, don't remember the number. Is this "phatak" close to station?

The thing on right should have been at the back of left one or at the other end of the shed.

It doesn't seems like doing 90+kmph. Probably not more than 60 kmph. Notice the people standing on the platform.

Looks like an early morning (or late evening) shot. They usually turn out to be the best because of the bright lighting. Plus I suppose John to the pains to walk up a hill of some sort to take this photo. I suppose such efforts usually pay off very well.

Hmmm...One thing that has always mystified me (pardon my poor knowledge) - What are the spring-like things on the side for? Used to see them aplenty a couple of years ago but not seeing them anymore though...
