South_India_NG_Timetables_22

The Tarikere- NR pura tramway no more exists since the Bhadra dam submerged the rail lines. But during summer, we do occasionally get to see a railway bridge which used to cross the river.
This line was built by the British to transport teak wood from the deciduous jungles of the Muthodi range (Chickmagalur district,Karnataka).

Hinged Buffer mounting plate

Swinging the buffer out of the way would allow the crane to come closer to the object being lifted. Even a few critical inches could make a significant difference to the amount of load lifted by the crane.

Steam driven winch turning mechanism

This is very similar to modern earth moving machinary used. Instead of steam, Hydraulic (high pressure oil) is used. The crank shaft would transfer power to worm which would then rotate wheel gear (middle right)rotating the whole assembly over thrust bearing. Its sad to see however such a fine machine rusting away

GIPR Poona Races ad 2 copy.jpg

I think its safe to say that 'classy service' on IR disappeared very long ago. Mr.Muirhead (God bless him!) would turn in his grave if he saw what IRCTC were up to today!
