Apurva, So why is it that WDM2 or its derivatives are not used on the down gradient? Isn't it a waste of these technologically superior and more powerful locomotives to be used only for braking purposes and returning back light?

Five locos are used to provide maximum braking efforts. This combination is never used for hauling the climbing train as the excessive power could damage the couplers.

@Mr. Anant - You have forgot one very important thing - Loco Classed WCG2 from 20104 till 20160 are still alive, albeit, with many of them being decommissioned and also kept in museum. Eventhough only around 30 locos are alive, still, IR may not want to use this number series at present. Also a circular from Rly board was issued to this effect to continue numbering from 40000 onwards

this is quite a revelation! If bogie design, prime mover HP and tractions remain the same, why is IR following 2 road number series for this loco class?

It is just a different kind of design that we have not been used to. The windows by the side - now they do look pretty outdated and take away from the asthetics of the loco a little bit....

GRRRREAT livery especially the use of the 'strong' navy blue.
