In case of Alco's the reason for smoke is turbo lag.
When loco is notched up, the turbo takes some time to gain RPM and till then the loco smokes.

Hey Mr. Boatman, your snaps are getting better by the day...keep them coming. Super Stuff, very very refreshing indeed. The best part is that off late Ashwin has been providing us with quite a few captures from a boat or river bed, but still manages to garner praise. Keep it up man!!!
