What is the first coach? Looks different...

Posted by Aravind S on 2009 Dec 21 05:03:17 +0000

Beautiful shot, Naveen!

The first coach is not only different, but has a broken roof too.

If I am not mistaken then the first coach is used during electrification / rewiring of track sections. The wire coils are stored in the coach and access to the OHE is via the open section of the roof which slides back to close.

Shanx, Some of the wiring coaches with recessed roof, hold a dummy panto which is used for checking alignment of the OHE wire.

Lovely picture. The first coach has only one door and must be devoted to departmental duties. Apart from the wiring train/dummy panto explanation, a modified coach with a sliding roof for carrying passenger wheelsets has also been spotted a few years back at Chennai.
