Lovely picture. The first coach has only one door and must be devoted to departmental duties. Apart from the wiring train/dummy panto explanation, a modified coach with a sliding roof for carrying passenger wheelsets has also been spotted a few years...

Shanx, Some of the wiring coaches with recessed roof, hold a dummy panto which is used for checking alignment of the OHE wire.

If I am not mistaken then the first coach is used during electrification / rewiring of track sections. The wire coils are stored in the coach and access to the OHE is via the open section of the roof which slides back to close.
