Right on! WAP-4 is a beauty, somehow IMHO the Great Whites are no match, looks wise, for the Reds! Very very elegant, gives us the impression of being a graceful beast!

Superb photograph. Nothing, not even the WAP5/7 can match the elegance of a WAP4...also, surprised to see so much greenery in Chennai in Summer!

Some more points !

1.The diesel might be smoking because its idling without crew(tough this is a possibility ,present day energy conserving procedures dont favour this).

2.Yes if the second WAG-7 failed, they must have attached the shakti to help this loaded(?) rake climb the gradient(?).In this case,Shakti driver will apply traction as per lead WAG-7 driver instructions while the driver in lead WAG-7 will take care of braking when required and traction.

3.Even shunting rules require the pilot to be in that cab which offers him the best visibility. If shakti alone is applying power, point 2 is valid except that the lead WAG-7 driver wont(actually he cant)apply traction power.

More discussions if any,we will do it in the main list.I can see danger signal coming !!

As Ashwanth says, if an electric cannot be MUED to a diesel, then why was the 'Shakti' smoking?
could the lead electric and the 'Shakti' be both live (but not MUED) or could only the 'Shakti' be live?

some points

1.An electric loco cannot be mu'ed to a diesel.
2.The two WAG-7 locos might be mu'ed but the driver in the leading cab of leading WAG-7 can control the panto of trailing WAG-7(May the rake is empty or the train is descending a down gradient).
3.WAG-7 can be mu'ed to WAG5HA.
4.Yes if I have a trio of WAG5HAS,I can MU all three and then shut down the middle loco if I want. The first and third will still cooperate.

The work is probably related to the doubling work between ERS and Mulanturuthy.

Note the shallow depth of field even at f/8 (assuming the EXIF information is correct). If the focal length is indeed 210 mm, it would have been a formidable sized equipment that you were carrying, considering that it is a D100. Did you have a photography permit, or were there just no RPF in the station?
