In BOXN/BCN/BTPN wagons a handle is provided on both sides of the wagon which has two positions, namely Empty and Loaded. This lever operates a mechanism known as the Empty Load Box which is a set of levers which if placed on the Empty position reduce the brake power of the wagon and if placed on the Loaded position enhance the brake power of the wagon. In these wagons the handle has to be changed manually for each wagon while the above device does the same automatically in BLCB wagons.Another difference is that in the manual system the objective is achieved by a purely mechnical system while in the BLCB wagons the Empty Load Box has been dispensed with and the task is handled by the Distributor Valve itself.
The main advantage of the Empty/Loaded changeover system is that it gives an almost uniform braking performance whether the wagon is loaded or empty and reduces wear and tear of brake blocks and wheels during empty running and minimises chances of wheel skidding.
