The indicators confirm that a particular route has been set. When the lever is engaged, disc inside the box turns and the face colour goes all white.

Sir, the best part is - the beast is proudly standing bang in front of their headquarters! If this loco was photographed from the right side, you could see their flag hoisted atop a building in the background! Thankfully IR keeps no such regional bias!
