Dilip, the loco is always attached towards the Mettupalaiyam end of the rake. So when the train is climbing towards Ooty, the loco pushes the rake up. And all the locomotives have their Tender end towards Mettupalaiyam.

Why does the X class on NMR always run with the Tender Front mode. Is it for better visibility ?
