The stripes are supposed to make the loco more visible from a longer distance away.

They are called "tiger stripes" on this forum. I remember sometime back some of our US-based members remarked that these stripes were similar to some US locos. Could be a coincidence.

I have seen similar red and white stripes on disel locos in the United States. Here the stripes formed an inverted V shape on the front of the loco.
