WDM2A 18885 from Kazipet at the head of the Nagarsol Nanded Passenger begins braking on the approach to the station. The signal showing proceed in this case is actually an upper quadrant gate signal. What is that flat sheet above the signal? A solar panel?. Jalna (Manmad - Nanded), 2003-10. Alok Patel.

The days to run trials for these panels are over. You find them all over Kerala too on the Shornur-Cannanore stretch. Its been there for 5 years. I guess the reason to use solar panels would be to avoid wiring issues and to an extent power savings.

I wonder why they would install an expensive solar panel inside the town where electricity can easily be fed from elsewhere. Perhaps it was under trials and they were monitoring it?

Hi Alok. Yes; thats a solar panel. The big black box behind the semaphore arm in the rechargeable battery pack so the signal lasts the whole night.
