WDS6 Shunter

WDS6_1.jpg (48513 bytes) This is the standard heavy shunter of the Indian Railways, the WDS6. The WDS6 has a WDM2 frame with a 1200 HP inline 6 cylinder engine and the electric transmission of a YDM4. Lack of dynamic brakes permit the low short hood. Here is a Pune shed WDS6 pulling two TK tank wagons and pushing a brake van.
WDS6_2.jpg (47092 bytes) After decoupling the TK wagons, the brake van gets pushed away. The crew members relax on the platform of the brake van during their lunch break.
WDS6_3.jpg (46660 bytes) Another view of the loco. The weight of the loco is increased by adding blocks of steel over the bogies to compensate for the lighter power pack.
WDS6_4.jpg (41237 bytes) The brake van gets pushed to a waiting WDS4 diesel hydraulic shunter.
