A Barsi Railway narrow gauge (2' 6" gauge ) coach without
wheels on a broad gauge BFR flat wagon. This is a rundown coach
without wheels probably en route to Matunga workshops in Mumbai for
a thorough refurbishing. Most Central Railway hardware are sent to
Matunga for a full repairs, specially accident jobs. The Barsi
Light Railways (BLR) crosses the mainline to Solapur at Kurduwadi,
110 Kms away from Daund. |
|
The incessant shunting in Daund now moves the BLR coach behind
the Yard Master's office. |
|
Another piggyback, this time a ZDM5A narrow gauge loco of the
BLR. Judging by its immaculate appearance, it seems to have been
worked over by the Matunga gang and is on its way to the home shed
at Kurduwadi. The family of ZDM5 Diesel Hydraulic loco is powered
by a MAK diesel of 700 Hp and is the staple power of the BLR. |
|
The driver sits on the left of the loco facing the short hood.
The throttle is a large wheel in the vertical plane which is
rotated one way for forward notching up and the other way for
reverse. During long hood travel, the driver just faces the other
way on his circular stool. There is a mechanical catch which
prevents the wheel moving either way when at 'zero' position. |
|
Side view of the loco. Note the front sloping profile of the
nose. The long hood contains the entire engine and the hydraulic
transmission while the short hood contains the radiators, radiator
fan and the engine starting batteries. The Kurduwadi gang which
must have accompanied the loco to Matunga, play cards in the cab of
the loco. Note the 1 B - B 1 wheel arrangement, to spread the
weight of the loco on the lightly laid Latur - Miraj Barsi narrow
gauge. |
