Hi Harsh,
I guess Bangalore too had 3 gauges long time back.
BTW I would love to post a few more vintage pics from the Western
railway
archives which includes 2 WPs at Lower Parel shed, A WP steaming out
with
a special train from Ballard Pier (Bombay Docks), Steam Hauled Frontier
in
Dara Pass, Royal Train entering Bombay Central Station and a few more
but
the chaps at our computer section are threating me to discontinue my
Email
account since it's occupying a great space.
Aab kya karoon?

Date: 08 Dec 1998 21:01:35 -0500
Gang !
This is one of the evergreen threads which gets started once in a way.
Dn track is the one that is going away from the Headquarters - All
trains moving away from say Mumbai are Down, Hence 6011 is Down until
Renigunta - then it enters the Southern Rail territory and now is facing
the HQ (Chennai) and is now 6011 Up ! Thus the Up and Down is actually
defined by the tracks on which the train stands. The Up & Down status on
a train changes if the direction changes - The 2627 SBC - NDLS Karnatak
Express is Up till Daund and thereafter it is Down all the way to New
Delhi.

Folks !
Following our recent discussion on the new Shatabdi to Madgaon, there is
news of a day superfast train to Madgaon. This seems to be unique from
the
normal trains as is evident. Please find the reproduction of the reports
below. From the first report it would be very interesting to note that
Panvel will be the terminus for the proposed train.

Walk-in reservation on new train brings Goa closer to Mumbai
<A HREF="http://www.indian-express.com/fe/daily/19981016/28955724p.html">http://www.indian-express.com/fe/daily/19981016/28955724p.html</A>
Financial Express - 16 October 1998 - Shilpa Joglekar
Mumbai, Oct 15: From Mumbai to Goa in seven hours. And you don't even
need a
reservation. If you have made an impulsive plan to get away for the
weekend,
just walk on with your briefcase. You can buy a ticket on board.
This is the new Konkan Railway service, oops product, to be launched
within
a couple of weeks. The train, which will start at Panvel in the morning,
will have you in Goa by mid afternoon. Says B Rajaram, managing
director,
Konkan Railway Corporation, "There is a huge market for this route." So
far
Mumbaiites have had few options. A trip to Goa meant either a gruelling
12
hour drive or an expensive air ticket - neither are good options for a
weekend - even if it is a longish one. Now a seven hour journey, that
too at
a reasonable cost has brought Goa much closer than it ever was.
While the destination is already well sold, Konkan Railway is selling
the
journey now. So far, barring one train, the entire trip from Mumbai to
Goa
is at night, denying most travellers a view. The new, as yet
unchristened
train will change all that. Finally the stunningly beautiful coastline
will
be on display. Says Rajaram, "Before you even know it, you will be in
Goa."
Keeping in mind the market, Konkan Railway had decided to do away with
the
conventional reservations system. While a percentage of seats will be
reserved in advance, KRC will leave a certain percentage of seats
unreserved
till the last moment. This will enable people to simply walk on to the
train. These last minute tickets will be sold at a slight premium.
While a second class ticket will cost approximately Rs 500, the price of
the
first class tickets is still being worked out. However, the price of the
tickets will not remain constant. On non-peak days, special discounts
will
be offered. Says Rajaram, "The idea is to run the train at as high a
capacity as possible to ensure that it is a money spinner for us. The
ticket
prices will therefore be more a reflection of demand."
Konkan Railway has already received all the clearances necessary to
start
the train. It is only awaiting the delivery of rakes and coaches.

New train to Madgaon from Dec 31
<A HREF="http://www.indian-express.com/ie/daily/19981017/29050764p.html">http://www.indian-express.com/ie/daily/19981017/29050764p.html</A>
Saturday, October 17, 1998 EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, OCT 16: A new train will be introduced between Mumbai and
Madgaon.
Union minister of state for railways Ram Naik announced this at the
eighth
foundation day ceremony of Konkan Railway Corporation today. The new
train
will commence its run before December 31 from Panvel. Praising the
corporation for its efforts to streamline its services, he also called
for
better representation of local residents in KRC's employee list. Naik
said
that only three out of 31 food stalls, and six out of the 19 booths
given on
contract by KRC went to people who have lost their land during the
implementation of the project.
Naik declared that another advertisement would be put out by KRC calling
for
applications to operate stalls, booths and trollies. The minister also
inaugurated a new network system called KRNET linking all stations on
the
Konkan route. It works on a backbone of optical fibres laid along the
760 km
track.
KRC Chairman B Rajaram said the corporation would strive for economic
and
eco-friendly development of the region. He said that the KRC was aiming
to
break even by the year 2001 and then start repaying the debts.

No way ! Are you joking ? Who really wants to work here when it is
snowing

working in the winter!
Seriously speaking, it rarely snows that much even on the Simla Rly. and
when it does, well, running the train is last of the priorities!

Strikes me that a more likely etymology is that it's "ag-wallahs",
literally "the one who tends the fire", or fireman.

Dear Ken,
From the description that you offer, it seems that
they
showed a different version of this programme on your beam(which is not
unusual for Discovery) because we did'nt get to see the women of the
safety
bureau or the Chicago suburban accident or the school bus that got
ripped
while struck on the tracks.
There was a lot of scope for improvement in the programme though I would
feel that subjects like this have to live with the fact of using only
archive footage, computer animation and interviews in retrospect which
can
be quite boring. Have you ever heard or read the statements that Rly.
Managers and Ministers make in the aftermath of the accidents in India?

This is quite correct however there are still certain idiocyncracies in
the
system. For the comman man to know wheather it is an up or down service,
he
has to first know what railway is operating it and secondly which are
the HQ
for the particular Rly.

Well, can anyone provide any justification for the above peculiarity?
Apurva has picked up two perfect examples of 6011 and 2627 which do not
operate purely as either SR,SCR,CR or NR trains. Other examples are
branch
lines which are difficult to determine if they are going towards or away
from the HQ! More lights anyone?

This is a corruption of Aag walas - firemen - even the duty sheet
prepared at
the electric shed in the Mumbai CSTM has the columns - driver - augwala
- train
to be worked - reporting time - departure time. Even though these
drivers have
never worked a steam engine. The victorian term is sort of official in
some
railways although I have never seen any driver refer to his assistant
as an
aagwala.
Their ancient DC locos do occasionally catch fire - but that is another
story !

Gang !
Why Panvel ? Getting to Panvel for a proper Mumbaikar / Punekar is
impossible in
the early morning. I need your opinion on this - My belief is that the
the New
Mumbai traffic is not all that saturated (as yet) - what is the
restriction
about running this train via Kurla (Suburban not Terminus) - Mankhurd -
Vashi -
Panvel and then to the KR ? There was a talk of diverting the Deccan
Queen/
Shatabdi and Pragati via this route once the Panvel - Karjat link is
through -
which is atleast five years away. Otherwise a great idea to run a
morning
'tatkal reservation' train to Madgaon.
The train should start about now - otherwise the KRC would lose all the
Christmas holiday crowd to the buses. The Pune - Miraj - Castle Rock -
Madgaon
track is connected but the Inspector of Safety is not giving a
clearance for
passenger traffic until the catch sidings are modified in length to
accommodate
a BG rake..

Subject: 2100 kph achieved by Janata Express!
Date: 09 Dec 1998 01:35:26 -0500
Hello gang at irfca@cs.email
www.indianrailway.com is FULL of errors in the tt's.
Worse than TAAG.....
Missing trains. Duplicates. Wrong train
names. Trains leaving before they started.
Wrong place names. (i.e. ARA <> ADRA etc.).
Inconsistent place spellings. Wrong timings. Stops out
of sequence. Missing stops. Stops shown which the
train does not stop at. Wrong durations. And so on.
I've extracted some of the "funniest" bits - so, here are
the alleged fastest sector speeds as per that timetable...
Some here are genuine records... But, most are spurious. The first
figure is the
scheduled average speed over the named sector, in kph - only
averages over 100 kph are reported... Then the train and sector.
The last figure is the sector length (according to me).
I've already removed some of the worst (RATLAM-DAMOH-GODHRA rather
than RATLAM-DAHOD-GODHRA was a classic!)
Could the reasons for the errors be posted, please? (Like the correct
time at the station? My TAAG is too old.
And 2100kph is not bad... :))
Cheers!

Subject: "Interesting" Trains on IR!
Date: 09 Dec 1998 01:40:42 -0500
Hi gang at irfca!
Are any important or interesting or *named* trains missing
from the list below? Or ones you would like to see
details of in a book on Indian Railways? Please post
your suggested additions on the mailing list... Your
reasons for including a train can be wholly personal :)
I have only included odd-numbered trains to keep
the list shorter.
The use to be made of the info is stated in another post
of mine today... Hopefully, it will boost interest in
Indian Railways....
My favourite train is the (now downgraded, no ACC !) Punjab
Mail.
Thanks!
L Webber
(Big Time IR fan)
PS: Some duplicates ARE present thanks to train renumbering
- could some kind souls point these out too? Post it here
at irfca....

Subject: Longest and Shortest Train Route Distances on IR?
Date: 09 Dec 1998 01:45:13 -0500
Here is a gift for you friendly folks at irfca...
"Some interesting statistics..."
The first column is the total route length in kms of
the specified train. Where more than one train runs
along the same route, only one train (chosen
arbitrarily) is shown to save space.
BUT Some of the 'kilometrages' will be wrong, though.
Could the gang check, please, and post the corrections
on the mailing list? Use is spelled out elsewhere.
Thanks!
L Webber
PS: Some apparent errors aren't. Like the Kanniya Kubj,
which uses KanpurC one way and only KanpurA the other.
And some trains where the UP and DOWN ones use slightly
different routes (like a bypass), maybe (but maybe I am wrong)

Subject: Shortest IR route Jammu Tawi to KanniyaKumari? ;)
Date: 09 Dec 1998 02:09:55 -0500
Here is a poser for gurus... and for anyone else.
This is __my__ "shortest" route on Indian Railways from Jammu Tawi to
KanniyaKumari. 3613kms... (though some of the Konkan distances are
guesstimates till some kind soul helps me with them - see my other
posts).
No account is taken of how many changes of train or gauge may be
needed... The figures in brackets are cumulative kilometrages.
Challenge: CAN ANYONE BEAT THIS? I would love to know if I am wrong.
Please post the answer... And do you think Likhapani to Okha by the
shortest route is longer or shorter? (I'll post a route later for
that).
In IR-friendship
L Webber

cannot guarantee the best answer always
Optimum can be __made__ to mean 'Most interesting' or 'mostconvenient'

Subject: Longest Point-to-point Distance on IR is NOT JT-KK?
Date: 09 Dec 1998 02:33:38 -0500
OK, folks, here is my "best" Likhapani to Okha distance... 3665kms. Can
you beat it? Do compare it with the (shorter) JT-KK distance (even
Udhampur-KK) already posted. Was it what you expected? And, how do the
number of 'interesting places' passed compare? (149, per the itinerary
below).
Do you have any candidate for 'longest point-to-point' to beat this one?
Or are there *any* other pairs of stations you would like my program to
search out 'shortest IR distances' for you (Satara Rd to Sawantwadi Rd,
for example)? Please post any requests to the irfca list, and I'll post
the best answer found. Some are quite tricky... and the human eye does
not work out the best route all the time.
I have highlighted 2,100 stations of interest on IR. Any station
getting a mention in any major guide book (even as just an alighting
point for a place of interest) including of course Murray's Guide to the
subcontinent. Of course, *ALL* junctions and *ALL* places named on a
TAAG (that I possess), and all stops of "major" trains (list already
posted) are included. Could anyone make suggestions (here on the list)
of obscure places they would like to see included? Like "Water Pipe" or
"Aman Lodge" for example. Please also give the km-age to a near big
station too.
Thanks again!
L Webber

Subject: THE GAP Chhitauni - Valmikinagar Road, etc.
Date: 09 Dec 1998 04:17:18 -0500
I forgot to add to my "2,100 kph" post ( ;) ) that I guessed
the reason for the calculated Kaptanganj-Bagaha speed is that the gap
Chhitauni-Valmikinagar Road has been closed (though I could find no
reference to that in budgets)... anyone has that distance C-VR ?
Also, I know the super-speed of Sethu for QUILON-RAMATHAPURAM per
indianrailway.com is because they meant RAMANATHAPURAM instead...
The fast speeds for 5027/8 are probably the result of some swap around
of train times at Barauni/Katihar/Samastipur by indianrailway.com ,
since their reported route shows the train doubling back on itself!
But it is not clear which ones...
Also, though my post asking for candidates for my "interesting trains"
list has not yet come through on my server, may I ask for a list of
**named** trains using the Konkan sector (besides Rajdhani) please?
I've seen a couple of references here, but without numbers. And my
"interesting" list includes any train that has made it into the news,
TV, a film or whatever - or has ACC class.
And where is New Tinsukia with respect to Tinsukia, anyone?
Happiness is... an FC coupe.
Regards
L Webber

Note that 2627 changes the Up and Dn direction in the same (Central
Rail) zone and within the same division (Solapur) hence the only
criteria is the lines on which the train is standing - the line is Down
then the train is also down. The 6011 changes the Up and Dn status due
to change in zones but travels without any reversals.
Okay, we seem to be making some progress on the Up & Down issue.
What about cross lines like Daund Manmad which touch the Down & Up lines
on both ends ? The distance between CSTM to DD is 286 Kms and CSTM to
MMR is 262 Kms. Thus actually MMR is nearer than DD but the Daund -
Manmad is Down direction. The best way out of the Down and Up mess is to
accept and use the terminology as the railways would like us to do.
I have observed that 3xxx (Eastern rail) series trains and 5xxx (North
Eastern & NE Frontier rail) series trains arriving at say Mumbai are
always odd numbered like 3003 Up. This stands out with all the Up trains
arriving at Mumbai which are generally even numbered like 8002 Up.

Subject: East-West beats North-South by a whisker...
Date: 09 Dec 1998 04:54:15 -0500
OK, folks, below is my "best" Likhapani to Okha routage... 3665kms. Can
you beat it? Do compare it with the (shorter) JT-KK distance (even
Udhampur-KK) already posted. Was it what you expected? And, how do the
number of 'interesting places' passed compare? (149, per the so-called
itinerary below).
Any station
getting a mention in any major guide book (even as just an alighting
point for a place of interest) including of course John Murray's guide
to the subcontinent. Of course, *ALL* junctions and *ALL* places named
on a TAAG (that I possess), and all stops of "major" trains are
included. Could anyone make suggestions (here on the list) of obscure
places they would like to see included? Like "Water Pipe" or
'Jummapatti' or "Aman Lodge" for example, and oh, what a lovely view!
Please also give the km-age to a near big station at the same time....
And, could some of the "gang" with recent bradshaws or similar
check out my estimates of track-length between the places shown
right at the bottom, and post correcions here on the mailing list?
All these ones are measured by me from the large railway map, and
they are almost DEFINITELY wrong (but hopefully not too
wrong?). They represent 4-5 percent of the total of my work: but I
am pretty 'sure' of the others (bradshaw based, checked on map, train
speeds consistent). TAAG distances are at best a rough guide, and are
often misleading by trying to save space where there are multiple
routes.
The end result of my work will be a book and a website which
will allow all sorts of stuff - including predicting passing points
and times of all major (top 700?) trains (assuming they were running
on time :) ) and a real-time map showing their locations/speeds....
And with no inconsistencies at all. And lots of fascinating (to me at
least) stats.
Thanks for your guidance...
L Webber
PS: Some of the 'places' here are actually bridges
(always of scenic/photo interest) - like "R SON" which
means a crossing of the river Son. A number after the river is used
where the river is crossed at various different places.
