Pamban - Dhanushkodi. The line to RMM branched off at PBM.

Before the cyclone, Madras - Dhanushkodi was the mainline and Pamban - Rameswaram was the branch line with stopping passenger trains only with the sole exception of a through train running up to Madurai Jn. In the 1955 and 1958 timetables, the two stopping passenger trains were running between Mandapam (not Pamban) and Dhanushkodi. Still, a Rameswaram - Dhanushkodi passenger train in 1964 with reversal at Pamban Jn. is not an impossibility nor is a new Pamban - Dhanushkodi passenger train.
In any case the caption on the picture are comments of the photographer/news agency who should know better as they were there.

Most available info on the web refer to the ill fated train as the #653 Pamban-Dhanushkodi passenger train that met with its end, while waiting to enter the Dhanushkodi station on the night of Dec 22, 1964.

Rameswaram - Dhanushkodi OR Pamban - Dhanushkodi OR Dhanushkodi - Pamban? The question arises again.
