This is the first Indian Locomotive that I have seen with side mirrors. Excellent Photograph.

Er, what are the side mirrors for? Nothing is going to come up from the side, this is not the road. Its not for reversing the loco; the crew would go to the other cab for that. Its not for seeing the guard's flag, you couldn't possibly see the guard's flag 40+ wagons away in those little mirrors.

This pic is taken in TKD electric shed. The mirrors were not used at all but the idea was inspired from American practice (maybe even European?) to keep a track on the rake behind. This is very common on US diesel locomotives.
