Five locos are used to provide maximum braking efforts. This combination is never used for hauling the climbing train as the excessive power could damage the couplers.

Fantastic !

Apurva, So why is it that WDM2 or its derivatives are not used on the down gradient? Isn't it a waste of these technologically superior and more powerful locomotives to be used only for braking purposes and returning back light?

Great atmospheric capture.

To Harsh - this operation is explained in message # 197184. These locos earn revenue in both trips - they are AEB equipped locos meant for ghat operation and haul as well as bank freight trains between Kulem and Castle Rock section. Apart from the superior hauling power of EMD locos, their precise dynamic brakes stop a train all the way to zero speed - DC motored locos of the earlier generation cannot match this performance.

In olden days 8 WDM's used to be used on upgradient.
And rake used to be in two parts on down gradients.
5 WDG4's do the same work.

superb capture... In Walayar ghats (PGT divn/SR) freight trains r moving with single or multi banker loco in rainy season.. But there is no penta head operation..this is superb...
