This is not a diesel ! The loco is only standing on an unelectrified line. You can see the folden pantos on the roof.

Amol....In many western countries, the driver verifies if there are passengers boarding/alighting from trains before leaving a station. Hence the need for a rear-view mirror.

In a way rearview mirror can be helpful for the "pilots" to see the train during curves, spot signals from the guards and notice any unusual happenning like derailments etc.
