Nice shot, really. But how did the smoke originate? Is it the diesel fume turned white?

Certainly an informative picture. The "smoke" is because of production of microscopic particulate matter due to the effect of friction between wheel and the cast iron brake pad. When the brakes are applied, the brake pad which is softer, disintegrates faster. During disintegration, the frictional heat oxidizes the softer cast iron brake pad and what you see as "smoke" is nothing but this iron oxide particulate suspension in air. Not surprisingly, the oxidation of iron occurs at the wheel-brake pad interface and therefore one sees the "smoke" coming from the wheels. Needless to add that inhaling this "smoke" is injurious to health :-)
