Amit - the abandoned MG alignment (now used as a road) runs straight across the landscape. While converting the gauge, slightly different alignments were used to minimize the disruption. The MG to BG changeover took only one month.

I am not familiar with the topography of this area, but why couldn't they just build the track in a straight line (joining the two ends of the U) instead of a complete U? :)
