It is very difficult to transport civil maintenance material like bricks, sand etc., to locations along the tracks, which can be as far as 7 km from a motor-able road. Railway provides transport to contractors, from Kalka. I wonder if the work going on for collecting and moving unloaded bricks and sand, from a wagon for such purposes? Work has been completed till about 1 km ahead of Jhummapatti Station. From there, there till the point where we trekked, about 3 kms ahead of Jhummpatti, there was almost no track existant. The locals informed us that the damage beyond that point was more or less as extensive as the ones we saw. Trial runs are being counducted at random intervals on the tracks till Jhummapatti. I spent a lot of time getting this wagon set made in 1999-2000, when I was in charge of this section. This is a set of 3 wagons, with guard cabins built on both ends, on the wagon. The wagon has a U shaped rotating bracket to hold loaded rails, when negotiating the very very sharp curves. The old set (called FR set) got condemned and I had to fight to get this made from ordinary wagons.
