This has completly changed! I visited Palani around 10 years back and the so called winch was tied with a rope uphill and it opeated by a machine which pulls the rope. It took about 20 minutes to go uphill.

Uni-directional only? How would it run reverse? Do they have a driving cab arrangement at the rear? Going by the pic, I don't think so.

There are two such beasts running on the Jalamb Khamgaon route. One is powered by an Ashok Leyland Turbocharged engive while the other one has a Tata Cumins TC IC. Both are prone to overheating in summers.
