The water from the Walvan dam is led from Lonavala to Khandala in an open canal. The canal terminates in a “Forebay” facility near the top of the catch sidings. From this point, three huge pipes carry the water down the slope to the powerhouse in Khopoli. I was told that this facility is used to generate electricity only in event of a peak demand situation – normally the railways in Mumbai use a more convenient electric feeder for their regular requirement. The gentle stream you see in this picture takes water leaking (or deliberately dumped ?) from the “Forebay” facility. Yes, there is a railway connection to these pictures !
