A view of the area from 2007. Visible are the double lined tunnel 24 and the single line 24C. The 24C was built only during the 1980s, thus only the Tunnel 24 is visible in the map from 1929 – this is marked as Tunnel No 3. The top level road is the NH4 while the one below is the Pune-Mumbai expressway.
This top level road can be seen in the 1929 map as the zigzag between Tunnel 24 (numbers from the map) and Tunnel 3. The expressway was a railway track during those times ! This is shown passing through tunnel 24 (number from the map) and touching the main line at Khandala along the bank of the large water tank.
The two catch sidings visible in the map between Tunnels 24 and 3 would be located in the area that contains the under-construction AC traction substation. The DC substation currently in use is visible next to the tracks. Finding the area of the catch sidings was one of the objectives of this trip.
The turban clad person in this picture is on the hill that can be seen on the other side of the road in today’s pic. Note the profile of the Duke’s Nose in the picture with the turbaned person.
