@Milind : According to me the Diesel Loco's are fitted with separated Turbo super charger assembly. This assembly basically consists of two fans out of which one fan is rotated by the smoke generated inside and the other fan sucks the fresh air form the atmosphere. One can find this fan on the Long hood part of the loco below the Radiator fan.So due to this fresh air smoke power is reduced. So the "smell is different" . In case of Truck the Turbo charger is present no doubt in it , but in case of truck its not present as a separate unit. And the second reason is the number of cylinders , Trucks have generally 6 or 8 cylinders depending on the load carrying capability and our Diesel loco is of 16 cylinders.

Any idea why the smell of the smoke from a diesel loco is different from that of a truck although both use diesel engines?
