  4. Madras (???) railway engine

An unidentified locomotive, captioned simply "Madras Railways", from the "Revised and Enlarged ed. of The Science of Railways", date unknown but likely late 19th century. As far as is known from published locomotive lists such as in Hugh Hughes' lists, there were no 2-4-2T locomotives on either ISR, MSMR or SIR on either broad gauge or meter gauge, so the attribution to "Madras Railways" seems inaccurate. Scan from the Internet Archive of Book Images.
