  4. Great Indian Peninsula Railway military band. 1900s.

Great Indian Peninsular Railway military band, 1900s. The band had 52 members, all "native" (i.e, Indians), with an English bandmaster. The band was based at the Parel works, and was very popular for performances in the city of Bombay. The locomotive numbered 180 in the backdrop is Y2 class 2-8-4T which was built by North British in 1907/8. Locos of this class were used for banker duties on the GIP ghat section. A sister locomotive of this class has survived and is preserved at the National Rail Museum. Scan from the Internet Archive of Book Images. (Admin)
