Cawnpore Sugar Works 36 B3

A firm very closely connected with many of the industrial enterprises in Cawnpore is that of Begg Sutherland & Co, which is
the name at present given to the well-known Calcutta house of Begg Dunlop and Co. It was started as Begg Christie & Co in
1856, the present name adopted in 1875. In addition to their business as seed and produce merchants...they are interested in
many other undertakings.

The firm are managing agents for the Cawnpore Sugar Works Ltd. The refinery in Cawnpore was opened in 1894 and the
manufacture of fine sugar from gur purchased mainly in the eastern districts and Bihar. The object aimed at is pure cane
sugar made mechanically and free of bone and charcoal, objectionable to orthodox Hindus. The same firm are also managing
agents for the sugar factory opened in 1906 at Marhaura in Saran and for the Champron Sugar Co Ltd, a concern started in 1905
and worked on the continental central factory system. Most of the sugar is sold in Cawnpore, as also is that from the Japaha
factory belonging to the Bhikanpur indigo concern in Tirhut, for which Begg, Sutherland are the selling agents.

Begg, Sutherland are also managing agents for Indian Electric Supply & Traction Co Ltd, a London concern, claiming to be the
first public supply company outside the presidency towns. As well as supplying power for lights and fans to public
institutions, private houses and factories, the company owns a tramway, of which the preliminary length of 3 1/2 miles from
the EIR station to Sirsaya Ghat was opened in 1907. The electricity is becoming popular in Cawnpore, there are already three
electric driven flour mills in the city.

Begg, Sutherland also act as selling agents on behalf of the forestry department for resin made in the Naini Tal forest
division and for light railway construction on behalf of OK. They have recently been place in charge of the Government
experimental factory and refinery, now under construction for expressing oil from cotton seed.i

Saraya Sugar Mills, Sadar Nagar, near Gorakphur 37 H3

Mill appeared to be working close to full capacity in mid-January. Three locos are in steam daily - one MG for shunting
loaded cane wagons over the weighbridge and into the mill (VF 1033 on date of visit) , with two NG locos working the line
from the cane field into the mill. The usual loco for work to the loading point at Hetimpur (c.20 kms) is K 5175, which
still carries its NWR insignia.

On 12/1/198X, K 5175 broke the crankshaft to its middle driving wheel, about 5 kms out from the mill. After having its left
hand side motion dismantled, the loco limped back to the mil at about 1600 and K 3971 had to be rapidly steamed to serve as
mill pilot. On the MG, TWEED was the reserve loco and D 1719 was dumped.

At the height of activity, two trains a day were operating to Hetimpur, the first departing at 0500 and returning between
1200 and 1300, the second departing the mill at 1330 and arriving back at around 2000. xi
