Assam Oil Co, Dighboi
Petrol locomotive for Assam - The Engineer to hand by the last mail contains an illustration showing a petrol locomotive
built by McEwen Pratt to the order of Assam Oil Co for use in the companies oilfield in Assam. It is built to the
requirements of Indian State railway for MG, has six coupled wheels, the wheel base being 5'6". It will be used principally
for shunting purposes, in consequence of which it was absolutely essential that the whole structure should be a massive
design throughout. The engine is of the four-cylinder type and develops 50 bhp at 900 revs. The valves are mechanically
operated and the magneto is fitted with this firm's Murray attachment to facilitate ease in starting the engines. The latter
drives through gearing and then by two chains running in oil baths on to one of the axles, arrangements being provided
whereby these chains can always be kept at the proper tension. A multiple disc clutch is fitted, with springs to assist in
easy starting, and the shock in doing so is taken by springs fitted in the driving wheel. It has two speeds in either
direction of 41/2 and 10 mph. The loco is guaranteed to haul a gross load of 67 tons on the level at 10 mph, or the same
load up a gradient of 1 in 84 at 41/2 mph; this performance however, has we hear, been considerably exceeded. The draw bar
pull when travelling at 41/2 mph up a 1 in 20 incline was 1900 lb. The consumption of fuel was low. A trial of the engine o
a test bed gave 3 1/2 gallons of petrol per hour with the engine running at 900 rpm and developing 50 bhp. This gives
.56 of a pint per bhp per hour. Fuel capacity is provided by two 50 gallon tanks, and four ballast tanks are fitted capable
of holding, if necessary, about 11/2 tons of ballast. The net weight of the loco is 71/2 tons but when being fuelled loaded
with ballast and fuel in running order is approximately 9 tons. Brakes are fitted on al wheels. A large cooling surface has
been provided in the radiators owing to the extremely hot climate prevailing in Assam at certain periods of the year. The
circulation is on the thermosyphon principle. i The above is a description of the 1909 MP loco
