Viceroy's Arrival at Howrah
From The Statesman dated November 21, 1910.
Lord Hardinge In Calcutta
His Excellency Lord Hardinge, accompanied by Lady Hardinge and their little daughter, the Hon. Diamond Hardinge, arrived in Calcutta on Monday. The reception accorded in the new Viceroy was a very warm and cordial one, and His Excellency must have been pleased at the interest taken in his arrival by the Indian community. All along the route from Howrah to Government House the streets were lined with the poorer people anxious to get a view of the new Lat Sahib, and they cheered mightily as he and the Vicereine drove by. The verandahs and roofs of the houses along Strand Road were also crowded with a cheering populace. There was a notable diffrence as the procession got into the quarter near Government House and there was little or no cheering as it passed along Old Court House Street. The arrival at Howrah Station was quite a small function. Punctually to the second the Viceregal train steamed into the station ~ a brilliantly decorated Howrah station ~ and a moment later His Excellency was being introduced to the officials who were waiting to receive him.
