The Lines that United the Provinces
A journey from Gorakhpur to Lalkua on NER's once extensive MG system, undertaken by Mohan Bhuyan and Bharat Vohra at the end of September '08. An album containing mostly non railway content from the same trip is available here. Trip report is available here.
The east end of Gonda's platforms. 4 WDMx from different sheds can be seen here, 3 of them on layovers. The MG yard lies immediately behind and an RDSO track observation car can be seen as well. (Bharat Vohra)
R to L: 17742 from Gonda, another WDMx from Jhansi and a third from Samastipur take up track space between the platforms. (Bharat Vohra)
#17856, the 'Jumbo' from Mughalsarai shed at Gorakhpur. It hauled the Vaishali from Lucknow to Gorakhpur and possibly beyond to Barauni. (Bharat Vohra)
Gorakhpur's impressive station building, as seen from our hotel, across the road. (Bharat Vohra)
Gonda's 36070 marshals the workshop stock while a YDM4 stands adjacent to it on its layover. Both locos share the same power pack. (Bharat Vohra)
The shunting neck and entrance to Gorakhpur carriage shops, formerly a MG facility. (Bharat Vohra)
#6500 stands at the head of a passenger train on Gorakhpur's sole remaining albeit battered MG platform. (Bharat Vohra)
The remains of the MG island platform at Gorakhpur, with the carriage workshop to its left. ()
A view of Gorakhpur station yard, looking west. The single platform and a run around track are all that remain of the MG here. The large shed on the right is a part of the carriage workshop. The BG station area is to the extreme left of pic. ()
RA1 - the GM NER's inspection carriage - a non descript ICF coach. One can only imagine what the original saloon car must have been like. (Bharat Vohra)
As the Kapilavastu curves away northwest from Gorakhpur, an MG track leads to a ramp - the transfer facility for MG stock heading to and from Izzatnagar workshop. (Bharat Vohra)
Locos from Pune and Jhansi work as yard pilots in Gorakhpur's newer coaching depot. It is built on the site of the former steam loco shed. (Bharat Vohra)
Izzatnagar YDM4 6552 at the head of a BC freight consist at Nakaha Jungle. (Bharat Vohra)
#6581 brings in the UP Kapilavastu Exp into Campierganj. (Bharat Vohra)
YDM4 6524 waits with a passenger as the Kapilavastu pulls in to Anand Nagar (formely Pharenda) Jn. (Bharat Vohra)
#6419 brings in an east bound passenger into Bridgmanganj. (Bharat Vohra)
The Nainital Exp from Lalkua has just pulled in to Pf 3 while the Ruhelkhand awaits departure from Pf 2 - Lucknow Aishbaug. (Bharat Vohra)
The BG line to Barabanki parallels the MG between Aishbaug & Daliganj. (Bharat Vohra)
Crossing at Bakshi-ka-Talab with a well loaded train of milk cans, vendors and roof top riders. (Bharat Vohra)
YDM4 6571 roars past the waiting Ruhelkhand with the Mathura-Lucknow Exp in tow. (Bharat Vohra)
Picture perfect Oel station on the Sitapur - Mailani section. (Bharat Vohra)
