ZDM-5 513 awaits departure to Yavatmal, on the 113km leg of the 189km Achalpur-Murtajapur-Yavatmal railway in Central Railway, India. The line is known locally as the Shakuntala railway and its one train a day out and back still demands a crew of at least 4, crossing keepers and station masters; in sum it is a marvellous exercise in economic lunacy, especially as almost no-one actually buys a ticket!! ZDM-5 513 is a 450hp smaller version of the ZDM-3 (which has 750hp) but offers just 6 ton axle weights. It awaits the afternoon return from Yavatmal which will get back to Murtajapur anytime around 17.00. 19.12.2002. Simon Mortimer.
