WAG7 class AC freight locomotive:

  • Year entered service: 1992
  • Units built (maker): 650+ (CLW)
  • Wheel arrangement: Co-Co
  • Power: 5350hp (5000 cont.)
  • Weight: 123 tonnes
  • Max Speed: 100kmph

The WAG7 was built to replace the ageging and slightly underpowered WAG5 locomotive. The first 70 WAG7s produced all went to Mughalsarai shed, though some were later transferred to other sheds. The very first of the lot (#27001) is seen here at Hazrat Nizamuddin station in Delhi. It is banking (assisting) a 58 car BOXN rake loaded with coal.  This loco was chirstened ‘Shantidan’.

A WAG7 unit belonging to the Erode shed of SR crosses the Pennar bridge possibly headed towards the Tondiarpet Container Terminal of CONCOR just outside Chennai. The board in the foreground restricts trains in the Vijaywada direction to 50kmph over the bridge while trains in the Chennai direction are limited to 70kmph.

An Ajni based WAG7 enters Bhubaneshwar station with a fully loaded rake of coal. The rake consists of newly introduced BOBRN class of hopper wagons which have a 100kmph speed rating. These wagons are being deployed in increasing numbers by freight oriented zones like ER and SER.

Tigerface !!! This nickname has been given by railroad enthusiasts to the classic WAG7 livery with diagonal stripes dominating the loco face. The core of IR's heavy haul freight fleet, this loco can be seen  just about anywhere the wires go. Here a Kanpur power (#27087) hauls a BCN/A rake just north of Nellore. Note the retrofitted twin beam headlamps and the grinning asst. driver :o)

At Kosi Kalan near Mathura in Uttar Pradesh a Kanpur based WAG7(#27475) runs by with its front panto raised. This is the result of an official directive to drivers in winters in order to prevent damage to roof top electrical equipment from dew fallling off the catenary.

Minutes later, WAG7 (#27355) sped by with a rake of BCN/A empties towards Vijaywada. This route is hardly has any grades, therefore a single WAG5/7 is sufficient to haul fully loaded 4500T frieghts.
