Pictures of various locomotive sheds and yards on Indian Railways.

The trip shed at New Delhi station is an ideal place to watch locomotives from all over the country. At any given moment, electric & diesel locomotives from at least 10 different sheds can be seen here. The shed lies on the north end of the station yard.

The electric locomotive shed at Hyderabad station performs maintenance duties on visiting locomotives, as well as for locomotives from its sister shed at Lallaguda across the town. Located in the eastern corner of the yard, the shed is barely visible from the platforms.

Khar shed in Mumbai, plays host to the AC/DC locomotives of Western Railways when they visit Mumbai. This shed, along with the main AC/DC shed at Valsad perform an important role in keeping WRs loco fleet fighting fit. Visible easily from the pedestrain overbridge at Khar Rd. station, one can spot a bevy of WCAM1 and WCAM2 locos during da time. The yard in the top right corner of the pic is the Bandra Terminus.

Igatpuri’s AC electric loco trip shed is perhaps the busiest in India. Its job is to stable AC locos to enable trains to carry on their respective journeys after leaving the DC territory. Situated on the north end of the yard, the shed is choc-a-bloc with locos making it an ideal spot for loco watchers. The two gentlemen posing against the beasts are Mumbai IRFCAns Vivek Manvi (L) & Giridhar Patnaik.

Panvel station near Mumbai is an important freight transhipment point as it handles container traffic to and from the port terminals of JNPT and Nhava Sheva. Round the clock, flatcar upon flatcar decked with colorful containers can be seen arriving at the station. Here a WCAG1 & a WDM2 from Kalyan’s electric & diesel sheds respectively, wait for the signal to deposit their charges in the port sidings.

Shot from the pedestrian overbridge over the Hyderabad station, this picture shows detail of the coaching yard responsible for stabling and maintaining the passenger trains of the Hyderabad division. Important trains like the AP Express, Godavari Express & Charminar Express call this place home. The top left of the picture shows a WAP5 & 2 WAP4s idling the electric loco trip shed.

In Central Railway’s Mumbai CST yard, lies this tiny but important shed which looks after the DC, AC/DC locos used to haul trains out of this important terminus. The yard also stables a couple of diesel locos plus a large amount of passenger rakes, which are visible in the background.
