This derailment happened on the morning of Sunday 10 Oct 1999.
This is the view of the Mumbai - Pune line at Badlapur facing Pune.
Note the lofty mountains of the western ghats that the railways
would have to climb between Karjat and Lonavala. Note the Diesel
Electric Tower Car (DETC) homing at Kalyan for the rescue work.

Derailed rake of 1063 Down Dadar - Chennai Chennai Express (the
first Chennai is the destination, the second is the name of the
train!) at Ambarnath near Mumbai. This happened on 16th Oct 1999.
Committed railnut and fellow IRFCA member Karthik Giddu was in one of these
coaches, maybe the second coach in the picture, it has the
roof-mounted AC units found in the 3AC coach. An account of his experience can be found
here. Note the WDS6 on the adjacent track with the accident relief
train.

Suri and Nayar (Bangalore) make NDM6 mountain climbing loco at
Matheran. This is a 450 HP diesel hydraulic loco meant for
replacing the twin engined articulated NDM1. The article
accompanying the picture laments the increase in the number of
reserved seats on this train, which would drive the prices of the
tickets up for the locals for whom this train is the lifeline to
the world outside. The renewal of sleepers (75% complete) and the
introduction of the NDM6 has increased the efficiency of the Neral
Matheran line.
