The 'corbelled' projections at top of piers help in reducing the span for stone slabs. Typically stone slabs were used over 30-60 cm clear openings at top, between the projected stones. The span at bed level, where the water flows can be 1 m or higher, due to this corbelling.

I remember Samit and B.Saha climbing up the steel ladder inside the bowels of the watch tower, to the top to take some breathtaking pictures of the ghats etc.
