Interior of the tunnel 26 – this has been shown as Tunnel 1 in this map from 1929. This tunnel is lined on the side and on the roof with masonry – even the many refuge points (like the one seen in the picture) are nicely finished. We could not locate any evidence of the ventilation shafts numbers 1 and 2 mentioned in the 1929 map. The tunnel 26 has a bamboo ladder hanging on the side to cater for any situations that would require climbing towards the roof.
