The 571’s SLR carries the cash collected at each station on a daily basis to the headquarters. The station master places the cash receipts in a leather pouch, seals it with shellac and drops it into this traveling safe via a rotating handle mechanism on the top surface. This mechanism allows deposits of the pouches but prevents any retrieval through the same path thus avoiding any chance of pilferage. Unfortunately, the rotating handle jammed on this particular safe, hence the money could be only collected at the first station after Salem – the rest would be collected on the next day. Here, the station khalasi seals the safe with twine and shellac so that is not used further in the journey. The brass tipped station master’s seal is visible near the familiar bottle recycled to burns kerosene needed to melt the shellac. (Apurva)
