The ports on the cylinder to the left is exposed to the air box with the piston below the ports probably at the bottom dead center. At this point, the high pressure compressed air in the air box is forced into the cylinder pushing the burnt exhaust gases through the exhaust valves on the cylinder head. The piston on the upstroke will seal the intake ports and start the compression and power cycle of the 2 stroke engine.
