This locomotives is the first of BESA standard goods (SG) 0-6-0 locomotive to be provided with superheating and became SGS class. Built for the North Western Railway in 1915, it was renumbered as 3980. Superheating was incorporated on all members of the SG class after 1927 and they came to be known as SGC class thereafter.
