Traffic estimates are around 1,500,000 passengers annually per mile of tramways, at a time when Bombay's total population was just about 1,000,000. The maximum fare was 1-1/2 anna for travel up to 7 miles, with the average fare per passenger being 1 anna. Initially an upper or first class of accommodation was provided with 50% higher fares, for Europeans and "upper class" natives, but this was scrapped as "even in caste-ridden India, the democracy of the trolley prevailed", according to the book source (Electric Railway Journal, 1908?).
