This is not Chilka lake! These are the backwaters of the Ujni dam that run for many kms along the railway line near Bhigwan. Ujni is where the waters of all the Pune area rivers drain into. Consequently the reservoir has a colossal size – many times the combined capacity of all the dams upstream. The Ujni supports a plethora of exotic water birds (including Flamingoes) – one of whom (a crane I think) can be seen in the lower corner of the picture. The pleasant flip side of this fact is that one can hear (but not see – the distance is just too much) trains while watching birds. Aboard the 1014 Up Express near Bhigwan, 2006-09-10.
