DHR Pics

Page 3

The same afternoon, we paid another visit to Darjeeling station to witness the steam action.  Here are those pics.

dhr56.jpg (56874 bytes)  The Plaque mounted on the wall at Darjeeling station stating the declaration of DHR as World Heritage, by Mamta Banerjee.

dhr62.jpg (72121 bytes)  After reaching the station, I wanted to click the two steam locomotives stabled in Darjeeling Trip(??) shed.  This is the pic of the first one, No. 779 named 'Himalayan Bird'.  The ass of the maruti spoiled the shot :(  It had been sitting there since the morning, preventing me to capture the loco in the morning, but I guess I wasn't lucky that day.

dhr63.jpg (69587 bytes)  The second loco, named 'Baby Sivok'.  This one looks like one of the smaller locos and was much smaller than the one above (No. 779).  I had to move across the road and much closer to the loco due to the non-stop traffic, which didn't give me the shot I was looking for.

dhr64.jpg (69783 bytes)  I stepped in closer to catch the front of the miniature loco. I wonder what kind of duties were assigned to this 'baby'.

dhr53.jpg (58232 bytes)  A view towards inside the Trip shed at Darjeeling.

dhr69.jpg (77638 bytes)  After that it was back across the street where all the action was about to take place.  Loco No. 791 approaches the station with its whistle blowing melodiously, warning (and entertaining :)) the people, to attach to the afternoon steam hauled train.

dhr65.jpg (74631 bytes)  After clearing the crowd, the loco is here to attach to the train.

dhr66.jpg (75647 bytes)  Preparing the loco for the departure.

dhr68.jpg (50281 bytes)  Feeding the beast......

dhr71.jpg (47571 bytes)  Spreading the fire evenly around the firebox.

dhr52.jpg (53306 bytes)  The hard working people who, at many times, go unnoticed.  The fireman, breaking the coal pieces into smaller pieces to ensure a better burning.
