DHR Pics
Page-2![]()
This page contains some pics of the famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. These pics were taken during my trip to Darjeeling a few years back. More pics have been added from my trip in 2002, including those of NDM6, now in service (06/03).
The first train of the day to New Jalpaiguri (NJP), hauled by an NDM6 class
locomotive, under goes various checks at the turn-table, also used as a checking
pit. It was an incredibly clear day and you can spot the snow covered peaks of
the Himalayas just above the cab of the loco, in the background.
The hard working crew ensuring a safe trip for the passengers down the steep
grades. Here they are checking the under side of the coach.
The train having completed the checks, starts to shunt back to the platform to
pick up the passengers. Again, note the Himalayas in the background above
the roof of the coach.
And we are on our way...... The little NDM6 battling against various
factors, both natural and human. Struggling with steep grade between
Darjeeling and Ghum, The wheel slips, and the usual clutter of traffic and
people. The only advantage NDM6 has over its steam counterpart is the throaty
pressure horn that it boasts. Manages to get everyone's attention very easily.
:-))
After covering close to a few Km's we came to a stop and backed up into one
of the siding between Darjeeling and Ghum. We were giving way to the steam
hauled train from Kurseong to Darjeeling. It was a great sight and all the
people enjoy the sight of mid-way crossings.
A closer view of the steam loco (No. 791), as it eases its way down the grade to
Darjeeling. The drivers exchange a casual 'Hi'.
And we are on our way again. The white stuff besides the track is not
limestone or anything else.:-)) Its snow.
NDM6 battles its way around the Batasia Loop, still struggling hard with
wheel slips.
Rear of the train consisting of a First-Class car and a luggage van.
Our journey ended at Ghum. The station had undergone a major facelift
since the last I had visited it, due to the declaration of the DHR as a
heritage. The train makes its way out of the station for the rest and the
easier part of the journey.
