I may be missing some context here but after the GT timing got shunted
by 6 hours from a 5pm(?) start to 11pm start at Madras, it had become a
less preferable train. I was fortunate to travel on the 30 hr. TN but
as fortune would have it, some major accident happened on the
Madras-Gudur section and we had sights of Arakonam, Renigunta,
Guntakal, Wadi, Secunderabad and Kazipet in addition to the usual
fare and the train arrived in Bhopal (our destination) 23 hrs. late at
02:25. :-) The return to Madras was also spectacular when we were
supposed to take the TN at Nagpur and ended up taking the Vasavi(?)
express to Bhusaval and taking the GT (which had to take the circuitous
route thru Itarsi-Bhusaval-Dhond-Raichur-Madras due to some derailment
on Nagpur-Itarsi section) there and ended up at Madras at 03:00.
Despite its delays, I got a bit lucky another time when I had a pretty
all-around view of the Taj when the TN had a go up a railway line from Agra
25-30 Kms towards the Delhi-Howrah line and come back to Agra on its way
to Delhi. Sorry folks, got a little carried away in my first mail after my
resurrected subscription to the list. (Thanks Satish!)

Actually the rakes for GT, TN and Kerala express are interchanged
invariably in N. Delhi and perhaps in Madras now a days so that there is maximum utilisation of the rakes.
I also agree with you folks that GT is a more royal train as compared
to its counterparts running on the same route ( or most part of it )

Few of you folks might have seen my logo in SCI or RMIM or SCT but I
will show it here again with a disclaimer that I did not draw or
design any part of it.

I don't quite see how the utilization of GT carriages can be
improved by interchanging with AP and TN express carriages.
GT runs 7 days a week, so all the carriages are under
constant utilization save the time between their arrival
and departure from N. Delhi junction.. Am I missing something
here?

Subject: Palace on Wheels

Date: 21 Jun 1994 13:05:00 -0500

Palace On Wheels At The End Of The Line
---------------------------------------

The Daily Telegraph (London)
Byline: Rahul Bedi

06/18/94

INDIA'S oldest train, the famous Palace on Wheels, which dates back to the
turn of the century, is to be retired. Following the changeover to a new gauge
of track in Rajasthan, the train -- made up of vintage maharajahs' carriages
and primarily used by western holidaymakers -- is to be replaced early next
year by a replica now being put together by engineers in Madras.

The original train's future is uncertain. The authorities are considering
operating it in Gujarat, where the gauge of the track has not been changed.

"The carriages in the new train will offer a mixture of modernity and olde
worlde decor, duplicated from the maharajahs' saloons," said Sanjiv Trehan of
the Palace on Wheels office in New Delhi. The fare is expected to increase
from #140 to #200 per day for the seven-day trip. The new train will offer
piped music, television and video films and an electric bell to summon a
private khidmutgar -- an attendant dressed like a medieval servant in knee-
length coat and flowing turban. In the old train, passengers simply shouted
for the attendant.

Travellers determined to try the original train will have a chance when the
old train's final booking schedule comes into force in September. The round
trip from Delhi covers Jaipur, Chitorgarh, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur,
Bharatpur in Rajasthan and also the Taj Mahal at Agra.

The new Palace on Wheels train, however, will add Bikaner, an important
stopover for desert traders in medieval times, to its itinerary. The finale of
the trip will be a visit to India's only camel-breeding farm on the city's
outskirts. On its way back to Delhi, however, it will skip Bharatpur, renowned
for its bird sanctuary, regularly visited by flocks of Siberian cranes in
winter, and Agra.

The omission has infuriated many travel agents. "The Taj is a major
attraction for tourists," says Akbar Hussein of Exotic Journeys. Skipping it
will be bad for business, he argues, forcing tourists to make a special trip
to visit Agra.

There are also plans to introduce seven other Palaces on Wheels. Three of
them will operate in the south: one from Madras, where the British East India
Company first established its trading posts; another from Goa to Bangalore;
and a third from Trivandrum to Bangalore. Another train will be introduced on
the "Buddhist trail" in the eastern state of Bihar, visiting places associated
with the birth and life of the Buddha.

There is an ad by IR in the last India Today soliciting
operators for the various proposed ``Palace in Wheels''.
I don't remember the details of the routes.

Subject: The Burning Train

Date: 23 Jun 1994 19:31:00 -0500

Hi folks,
Couple of days back I saw a movie "The Burning Train" made
by BR Chopra in 1978. Just could not resist posting it, that I liked the
movie, considering the era in which this movie was made, it did not seem
very bad to me ( of course if u ignore the tangents of heroes chasing the hero-
ines and some other similar instances ). It contained a couple of songs which
were very good, particularly the one "Teri hai zameen, Tera Aasman, Tu Bada
Meherbaan....
To some extent this movie does give some flavour of what all goes inside
the trains and journeys.
I believe this movie was not a grand success and it seems producer
incurred losses in this movie as one of the coach was really burnt badly.
The color of the coaches indicate that they used a Rajdhani Express / AC
express for shooting.

Comments/suggestions/corrections welcome.

Date: 24 Jun 1994 14:18:00 -0500

Hi Folks,
I finally have my own email account:

vbalasub@mail.email
(Satish, please make the change if you have not already done so)

I just received some huge image files of Indian Railways. I had earlier
askedthe COmputer Services group to scan some of my photos. Unfortunately,
they are in PICT2 format and I am unable to convert them to GIF or JPEG.
Since this is my last day at GTE, my account would be closed down. I am going
to save these files on tape and try to get them loaded again once I reach New
Orleans. In the meantime, I would like to transfer these files to any of you
who has around 20 Mbytes of free space and has software to convert PICT2
format to GIF or JPEG.

The photos have come out quite good, so it would be nice if someone is able
to convert it into the correct format. Plus, I am not sure when I would be
able to load these beauties into the system and get access to software to
convert them.

Regards,
Vijay

Hi Folks,
Sridhar Venkataraman has very kindly agreed to store them temporarily. So,
we have two sets of images, except that I don't know when I'll be able to
retrieve my set from the tape. This is the info about viewing these images:

They are in "pict2" format, and can be seen on the Macintosh using
Teachtext,. They do have some conversion software here but it's not the
latest version and is not giving the proper output. Apparently, you have to
convert it into "pbm" first and then from "pbm" to gif (or jpeg).

The files are:
deccan_queen -> The end-on generator card of the Green-White-Red Deccan Queen
at Byculla yard.
rajdhani -> the Rajdhani exp. overtakes the Himgiri exp. (on which I was
traveling) between Bardhamman and Howrah.
wam4_pushpak -> A WAM4 loco. hauling the Pushpak Exp.
wam4_DV_exp -> Crossing the Dadar Varanasi Exp. at Chalisgaon. I was traveling
on the loco. of the Pushpak exp. as it IGNORED Chalisgaon.
wam4_goods -> crossing a goods train somewhere between Manmad and Bhusaval.
wdm2_udyan -> the twin-diesel hauled Udyan Exp. at Wadi station.
wdm2_goods -> a wdm2 hauled BOX-type goods train at Guntakal station
ydm4a_vaigai -> i snapped up the Vaigai Exp. with loco. at Tiruchchirapalli.
I was traveling on it from it from Dindigul to Madras.
vaigai -> Another shot of the Green-Yellow Vaigai Exp. coaches at Villupuram
wcm -> The Pushpak Exp. at Igatpuri about to change locos. (from wcm to wam4)
wcam -> A green WCAM1 loco. attached to the Kutch Exp. at Bombay Central.

I hope these get converted and you are able to view them. Have fun.

That's all for now. I'll send mail once I reach New Orleans.

Regards,

Vijay

P.S. S Pai and Srikant Ranade also offered to stored the images. Thanks.

Here is the latest (timings may have an error of 10-15 mins based on my
memory) :

* The name Minar Express has ceased to exist.

* A new train - Hussein-Sagar Express - will run on nearly identical
times as the old Minar Express.

H-S Exp: Bombay V.T. D. 21:55 -> S'bad A. 13:30
A. 06:20 <- D. 14:30

* Konarak Express will run Bombay-Bhubaneshwar-Bombay on the following
timings:

Bombay V.T. D. 23:10 -> B'war A. 13:15 (3rd day)
(3rd Day) A. 12:55 <- D. 22:20

* The number for H-S Exp is 7001/7002 and that for K. Exp. is
1019/1020 - implying that neither one is "Superfast".

* The new weekly Bombay Trivandrum Exp. has the following times for
the down journey. (The newspaper cutting did not have the up time).

Bombay V.T. D. 12:30 -> T'rum A. 06:20 (3rd day)

Enclosed below is a message I recently received. If anyone has any figures on
the final phase-out schedule of steam in IR and/or suggestions on which spots
are better for photography, perhaps they can post it here on the list and I
can forward the collected replies to this person who is enquiring.

Over the weekend we have added about 15 new members to the list, at least
partially due to (I presume) an announcement I made in soc.culture.indian.info.
One member (Ruman at UCI) has left us. We have around 60 members on the list
now.

Hello all,

I'm trying to find out about steam trains in India. I read an article last
year in The Times (London, UK) about the phasing out of steam locos in favour
of diesel. Apparently this is happening over two years.

Is it true? The reason I ask is that I've always wanted to go and photograph
them and if they're being phased out then I can do an "end of an era" type
approach. I would be very grateful for any information that anyone might have.

Thanks,

Tom.

When IR decided to stop making steam locos (1971 ?), they decided on
a 30 year phase-out schedule (30 year is the life time of a steam loco).
Several people have opined in the past that a much faster phase-out
would be economically and environmentally beneficial, but due to strong
lobby of mechanical engineers in IR, that could not be done. But as
time passes, and steam lobby weakens, while diesel lobby is gaining
strength, it has become possible to remove steam-locos at a faster rate.

I believe that the last steam loco is supposed to stop plying in 1997
or earlier.

1. Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd signed an agreement on Thursday with a
British consortium headed by CGM Partners of London, for providing forced
ventilation on a turnkey basis to 3 of the longest tunnels on the Konkan
railway, reports UNI from Bombay.

2. IR is considering a scheme to network all regional computer systems into a
central system by the end of this year so that a passenger can use a terminal
to book his travel from one station to any other in the country, said the new
Railway Board Chairman, Mr Ashok Bhatnagar.

Though this is not technical..thought it might be interesting,

Fifty-five trains from all over the country would be run to Delhi for
bringing in Congress workers for the proposed July 14 rally to mark
the completion of 3 years of Narasimha Rao Govt. This was mentioned by
the Congress spokesman in Delhi.

Presumably, the Congress Party will pay for running these trains. If
they do pay the costs, I am not sure if we can still call it misuse.
Another interesting political news in this regard was the circular
issued by organizers to all Congressmen to behave themselves on these
trains - not to force them to stop at intermediate stations, not to
enter ladies' compartment, etc. The circular was criticized because it
sort of admits that Congressmen are unruly.
