North Konkan Outing 14th February 2007.

This trip was based on Lalam’s bright spark to spend an entire day in the Raigad district, starting and ending our session with the sightings of the two Rajdhani Expresses on the Konkan Railways. This was the first time that the Pune gang – Satish (Gune), Lalam (Mandavkar) and Apurva went to railfanning locations by a taxi rather than by a train, for this is only time effective way to cover vast parts of the remote KR easily. This is a joint presentation by the three of us – the photographer’s name for a particular image is mentioned at the end.

We visit a tiny flag station, Goregaon Road (code=GNO) located between Veer and Mangaon. The station is quite far from the town and is accessible only by tiny village roads. I would always cherish the memory of this place – we got so many good photo opp

Although there is no station master or signals to GNO, there is a ticket counter and a voice announcement that told us that the KR6 Up Sawantwadi – Diva Passenger was due to arrive here. Instead a train came from the opposite direction, the 6345 Down Lo

This was so beautiful. While the full strength sun was making this a hot day, the occasional cool sea breeze gave us a much needed respite.

A view North of Goregaon Road – the train curves and exits in a gulley located where the mountain slopes on the right. Note the passenger standing on the roof of the 4th coach !

The KR 6 Up curves towards Mangaon. The lone rooftop passenger seems to have settled down. These passenger trains are very popular, they are cheap, they are fast and the track takes massive short cuts as compared to the roads.

The last shoot of the day before we ended – the 2431 Up TVC-NZM Rajdhani Express shooting past the Kaal river bridge in Mangaon. The distant bridge is an aqueduct for an irrigation canal. (Apurva)

A perfect shot – the 2431 Up in the middle of the bridge span. We could not get any closer – the foliage was too thick ! (Lalam)

Excellent pics and excellent team work. I liked all the shots. Especially the water shots of KR3 and Rajdhani.

Appu you have really proved what you preach - "you have been sent there by God to do your duty - take great pics! Be prepared to take efforts rather than risk". I really liked the three of you going to three destinations and taking the pic of the same train in different angles. I think this should be a policy of all railfans going on trips to spread out and take pics. Congrats to Lalam and Satish too
