  5. inside Tunnel_16june2007

We cautiously entered the tunnel - the place was pitch dark and our feeble torches were just not adequate to light up the tunnel interiors. While inside, we could not see the interiors with the clarity as seen in the picture. These details were apparent only after viewing the pictures on the computer.

An alternative name for this set of pictures could be ‘S**t Scared’.... The textured surface of the floor is a layer of bat guano that got steadily thicker and stickier as we approached the middle of the tunnel where the ventilation shaft should have been - but we could not see any evidence of the shaft and we decided against walking through to the other end due to the heavy presence of agitated bats.

The whole atmosphere inside the tunnel was frankly quite unnerving and we soon retreated into the friendly outdoors.

Are my buddies covering themselves from a possible attack above ? Even John, who would never wear any head protection, is seen with a cap!
This picture is shot as we were leaving the tunnel. Note the white spots on the tunnel roof (which is quite high once inside) - these are mammalian eyes watching us....
